Civil War Trilogy Using haunting melodies with breath-taking harmonies, Bradley has created an awe-inspiring setting for these beloved Herman Melville poems. The first piece, The Portent (1859), is a short commentary on the origins of the Civil War. Malvern Hill (July, 1862) is a bright marching song in 4/4 time. The primary three verses begin in major keys but each ends minor. After a pause, the final reflective verse begins slowly and cadences on a beautifully scored major chord. The final movement, Shiloh - A Requiem (April, 1862), is a rhapsodic reflection of the battlefield at Shiloh after the bloody proceedings are finished.
