Lux aeterna
music by Phillip Schroeder

For centuries the inner spiritual meaning of the Lux aeterna communion from the Requiem Mass has provided a strong attraction for musical settings. This prayer for God to grant us eternal light is scored for a cappella choir in eight parts. Here the musical elements combine to create a shimmering and undulating quality, with the voices emerging and receding within the textures. The tonal centers, each emphasizing Lydian mode, form a cycle of descending major seconds, suggesting the imagery that beseeches God to allow the “light eternal shine upon them.”

Veni Sancte Spiritus
music by Phillip Schroeder

Veni Sancte Spiritus is a declaration and celebration of the infinite capacity for good, manifold consequences of compassion, and the vast healing effects provided by the divine light. This setting is scored for a cappella choir in six separate parts: SSATTB. The piece begins with a progression of the “fanfares” -- an exuberant joy for the beneficent nature of the Holy Spirit -- and concludes with a long section of resolute catharsis, secure in the knowledge of eternal spiritual liberation and peace.
